Actress Jun Ji-hyun said Monday that she views Cheon Song-yi, a popular character from “My Love from the Star,” as a hurdle to overcome at a press event for the forthcoming series “Legend of the Blue Sea.”

“Many people would have higher expectations for the drama and the role I play,” said the 35-year-old, referring to the role that brought her worldwide fame. “I can see things in common with the mermaid role and the Cheon Song-yi role, and the scriptwriter and I have talked about how to overcome the challenge that Cheon Song-yi poses.”

Jun also said the point of playing a mermaid was to recognize that everything familiar to humans is new to the character.

“What we perceive as normal is not to this mermaid,” she said. “I have high expectations for the role because it offered me more room for creativity.”

“Legend of the Blue Sea,” starring Korea’s top stars Lee Min-ho and Jun, will premiere Wednesday on SBS.
