Fans of South Korea’s two biggest boy bands, BTS and EXO, sat down with The Korea Herald to tell fans why and how they’d fallen in love with the bands.

One member of the BTS Army, a collective nickname for the band’s fans, called the band “(her) savior who came to ruin (her) life.”

“I think it’s great to like someone so much that you devote all your time and effort to that person,” she said, explaining that being part of the fandom made her life more “fun and meaningful.”

The Korea Herald took a brief tour of the fans’ rooms, where nearly every wall was covered with posters, postcards and banners depicting their favorite bands.
Woo Nam-yee fell in love with BTS after watching the band perform at the American Music Awards in 2017. She said the group’s performance at the prestigious American venue “came as a shock” to her because it was so good.

Woo said she feels as if the BTS boys are her “friends” and that they are all “growing up together.”

“It’s unbelievable and so inspirational that someone my age is making all these amazing accomplishments,” she said. “They are my motivation and inspiration.”
Jung Yoo-kyoung said she discovered EXO through f(x)’s 2013 song “Goodbye Summer,” and she instantly wanted to know who the male vocalist was. When she found out that it was D.O., the lead vocalist of EXO, she started looking up his other songs.
