The Vietnamese version of the 2011 South Korean box office sensation "Sunny" has become the fifth most watched local title of all time in the Southeast Asian country, the movie's overseas distributor said Monday.

"'Go Go Sisters,' which was released on March 9, has accumulated US$3.6 million, becoming the fifth top-grossing local movie of all time in Vietnam," CJ E&M said.

"Go Go Sisters" is the Vietnamese version of "Sunny," which attracted 7.45 million viewers in South Korea during its theatrical run in 2011. It is the first title from CJ HK Entertainment, a joint venture between South Korean media and entertainment company CJ E&M and the Vietnamese studio HK Film.

With the success of "Go Go Sisters," a total of four CJ E&M movies are among the top 10 domestic movies in Vietnam. Three others are "Let Hoi Decide" (2014), the first Korean-Vietnamese film co-production; "I Am Your Grandmother" (2015), the Vietnamese version of the Korean hit "Miss Granny;" and the romantic movie "The Girl From Yesterday" (2017).

"Boosted by their back-to-back successes in Vietnam, CJ E&M titles are giving a welcome fillip to the Vietnamese film scene," said Kim Kwon-sik, head of the overseas planning and production team of CJ E&M's film business division. "Slapstick comedies formed the mainstream in the past, but recently, films in the human comedy genre are popular in Vietnam."

"Sunny" will also be made into Japanese and American versions. The Japanese remake is set to open on Aug. 31, while the screenplay for the American version is being written with a Hollywood studio, according to CJ E&M. (Yonhap)
