CJ E&M was the No. 1 distributor in the Turkish film market during the country's winter high season, the media and entertainment unit of the South Korean conglomerate CJ said Tuesday.

The achievement came less than a year after CJ E&M established a movie production-distribution-investment unit in Turkey in May, a first for a South Korean firm.

Five films that the company invested in and distributed sold a total of 8.86 million tickets from last October through late January, accounting for 31 percent of all tickets sold in Turkey.

Winter is the peak season for Turkish cinema-goers with about 70 percent of the annual ticket sales generated during the season.

Three of the five films have already broken even and two of them became the third and sixth most-watched movies of all time in the country.

CJ E&M said it plans to invest in and distribute about 10 Turkish films in partnership with, BKM, the country's largest film studio.
