Actor Yoo Yeon-seok vowed to show his own version of Hedwig in the upcoming musical “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” in a recent interview for the August issue of The Musical, a magazine.

The musical centers on the life story of transgender singer Hedwig Robinson whose botched sex change operation left her a dysfunctional one-inch of flesh between her legs. In the musical, Yoo plays the unfortunate genderqueer Hedwig Robinson.

“It was uncomfortable to act in a female voice during my first practice,” he said. “But people told me it sounded natural so I gained confidence.”

To understand the character, he researched not only rock concerts but also performances by drag queens.

“I thought I needed to enjoy myself more on the stage. I’m trying to show my own version of Hedwig,” he said.

“Hedwig and the Angry Inch” starring Yoo will be staged from Aug. 18 to Nov. 5 at Hongik Daehangno Art Center Grand Theater.
