Singer-actor Ok Taecyeon of boy band 2PM will star in the upcoming OCN thriller series "Save Me," which centers on a fictional religious cult.

"The biggest reason for choosing 'Save Me' was the opportunity to work with excellent actors. Also the subject involving a religious cult isn't something that comes along easily. I found it intriguing," Ok said Thursday at a press conference held at the Time Square mall in western Seoul.

Ok plays Han Sang-hwan, a good-looking and witty high school student and a son of a county governor in a rural area. He joins a mysterious religious cult led by Baek Jung-ki, played by character actor Cho Sung-ha, in order to save his first love, portrayed by Seo Ye-ji, who is held by the sect.

The series is based on a hit web comic series "Out In The World," created by Cho Geum-san, which ran from June 2011 to January 2013.

"The charm of this drama is seeing how characters grow when they are faced with irrational social norms," Ok said.

The series is the first TV project for Director Kim Sung-soo, who had previously worked in the film industry. "I came across very good material and thought I had to direct it, not minding whether it should be a movie or a TV drama."

"Save Me" could likely be Ok's final project before he starts his mandatory military service. The singer gave up his American green card and has even received treatment for a spinal disc problem in order to serve.

"I really want to go (to the military) this year. I will if the Military Manpower Administration summons me. Wouldn't this be my final project (before joining the military)?”

In Korea, all able-bodied men have to fulfill military duty for around two years.

"Save Me" premieres Aug. 5 on OCN. (Yonhap)
