Joy from Red Velvet appeared at a press conference in Seoul on Wednesday to promote her new TV show “The Liar and His Lover.”

Based on the Japanese Magna series “Kanojo wa Uso o Aishisugiteru,” “The Liar and His Lover” is a music-themed TV show and marks Joy’s small screen debut.

The K-pop turned actress takes on the role of high school student Yoon So-rim, who is ordinary in every way except for when she sings. She stars alongside Lee Hyun-woo who plays the genius composer Kang Han-kyul who goes by the alias ‘K.’

Inspired by his lover, the nation’s diva Yuna, Kang focuses on creating music for his band Crude Play.

The high schooler is a fan of Crude Play and, without knowing Kang is the songwriter she admires, she become captivated by his music and falls in love with him.

With a voice that the show describes as heavenly, Yoon ends up joining Crude Play as the main singer.

“This is my first time acting, it was a very unnerving experience but I’m giving it my best, depending on the reliable staff and my seniors,” Joy said at the press conference.

Kim Jin-min, who directed the movie said that he picked Joy for the part mainly out of curiosity.

“It’s either I go down or up with this one, is how I thought of Joy,” said Kim, “It was curiosity that made me pick Joy for the lead, and on the first day of shooting she met my expectations.

Few K-pop stars have successfully made the crossover from singer to actress, with Hyeri from Girl’s Day being a notable example with her highly praised role in “Reply 1988” (2016). Kim, however, said that Joy has what it takes.

“She has the right questions. I dare say we might witness the birth of a good actress,” He said.

Joy admitted it was tough balancing the activities for Red Velvet’s new song “Rookie,” and shooting for the TV show.

“Both my Red Velvet bandmates and ‘The Liar and His Lover’ staff were very supportive and gave me time to recover in between my exhausting schedule,” Joy said.

“My bandmates especially are very enthusiastic about me being in a TV show. Back at our dormitory, they help monitor my acting and give feedback.”

“The Liar and His Lover” will air every Monday and Tuesday at 11 p.m. from March 20.
