V, a member of boy group BTS, said Saturday that he has recently been feeling sad due to his grandmother’s death.

He shared the news at the fan event “BTS 3RD MUSTER [ARMY.ZIP+]” over the weekend at the Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul.

“Fans have been asking why I appear so depressed these days,” V said at the event, “My grandmother passed away on the fourth of September.”

“The day we won the first place on ‘Music Bank’ was the 49th day after her death.”

In Korea, following Buddhist traditions, the 49th day after a person’s death is when the bereaved family lights incense to wish the deceased a smooth path to the afterlife.

V teared up as he said, “My grandmother always liked it so much seeing me up on TV. I wanted to do something special for her on screen for this win but she was already gone by that time.”

Recently, in a speech after a win, V had broken down in tears as he credited his grandmother for the prize.

V has also on multiple occasions mentioned his grandmother on and off TV, showing his close relationship with her.

The other members of BTS also grew tearful as V became emotional, and tried to comfort him.

“My grandmother told me to always treat our fans with love,” said V, “With the recent ‘Blood, Sweat and Tears’ album activities, us BTS have gotten closer to our dreams and goals.”

“I know this is thanks to our fan club ARMY, but I think my grandmother also played a great part, sending me her support from up above,” V said.
