Korean movie “Familyhood,” starring actress Kim Hye-soo in the lead role, topped local box offices in the first week of July.

According to the announcement by the Korean Film Council on Sunday, the film mobilized approximately 270,000 viewers on Saturday. A total of 658,797 viewers had watched the film since its release on Wednesday, the council said.

It has been rare for a female-led movie to be so successful in the Korean film industry.

The film’s position at the box office also proves the audience’s trust in Kim. Kim has portrayed a variety of characters in several movies, such as 2012’s “The Thieves,” 2013’s “The Face Reader” and last year’s “Coin Locker Girl.” The actress has also been expanding her horizons through roles in TV dramas as well, such as in “The Queen of the Office” (2013) and this year’s “Signal.”

If current trends continue, the movie is likely to hit 800,000 admissions over its first weekend and ultimately achieve over 2 million views, observers said.

The film deals with the pregnancy of an actress who gets dumped by her ex- boyfriend.
