The second episode of actors Juwon and Kim Tae-hee’s “Yongpal” (Aug. 6) smashed all records set by dramas aired so far this year, by gaining an average viewer rating of 14.1 percent and peak rate of 19.1 percent.

Rating aggregator Nielsen Korea noted the feat, as the growing trend in TV dramas show faltering rates barely making 10 percent and only soaring when the show draws to a finale.

Competing Wednesday-Thursday dramas, MBC’s “Night Scholar” recorded 7 percent, while KBS’ “Assembly” remained at 4 percent.

Critics analyze that “Yongpal” appeals to people beyond 40s age group, including those in their 20s.

“Yongpal” is a medical drama featuring a resident doctor leading a precarious dual life involving street gangsters in efforts to provide for his ailing sister. This medic falls for a beautiful patient in a comma, who is entangled in a corporate family feud.
