Four Korean films will be screened in non-competition categories of the Cannes International Film Festival that begins in Cannes, France, on Wednesday, with 19 feature films vying for the festival's top honor.

With no Korean films invited to compete in the festival's official competition section for the third consecutive year, the Korean films will be screened in a sidebar competition and non-competition categories of the 68th edition of the festival, according to the festival's official lineup.

The last South Korean films invited to be part of the official competition category were "In Another Country," by the award-winning director Hong Sang-soo, and "The Taste of Money," by Im Sang-soo, both in 2012.

The four that will earn screenings this year are "The Shameless," "Madonna," "Office" and "Coin Locker Girl."

"The Shameless," by Oh Seung-uk, and "Madonna," by Shin Su-won, will be screened in the "Un Certain Regard" section, a sidebar competition section for showcasing new trends in the global film industry, while "Office," by Hong Won-chan, will get a midnight screening. The "Midnight Screenings" is a non-competition section for thriller, horror, sci-fi and action films with high potential for commercial success.

Starring international award-winning actress Jeon Do-yeon and Kim Nam-gil, "The Shameless" is the love story of a police detective and the lover of a murder suspect.

This will be Jeon's fourth presence at Cannes. She earned the nickname, "Queen of the Cannes," for winning the best actress for "Secret Sunshine," by director Lee Chang-dong, in 2007. In 2010, she re-established her status as a Korean A-list actress when "The Housemaid," in which she played the title role, was invited to the festival's official competition category. She also was among the nine members of the main competition jury for last year's event.

"Madonna," the first feature film by director Shin, is about a secret held by a common girl named Mina who falls into a coma.

Directed by Hong Won-chan, "Office" is a thriller about a common office worker who disappears after brutally killing his family members.

"Coin Locker Girl," a crime drama starring Kim Hye-soo and Kim Go-eun, was invited to be screened in the non-competition Directors' Fortnight category.

The feature-length debut from director Han Jun-hee is about a baby girl who is left in a coin-operated storage locker in a subway station and grew up in the hands of loan sharks.

The 68th edition of the festival will run from May 13 to 24 this year. (Yonhap)
