Kim Hyun-joong's lawyer on Monday dismissed reports that the singer-actor's former girlfriend had a miscarriage as a result of domestic violence before their legal dispute.

The lawyer told a local media outlet that Kim had already paid 600 million won ($549,700) in a settlement last year.

"Kim's former girlfriend threatened that she would make him a violent offender who had caused a pregnant woman to miscarry, which frightened Kim and he passed on the settlement," said the lawyer.

Kim was not certain if his former girlfriend, surnamed Choi, was indeed either pregnant or had miscarried. He had solely communicated with her about the issue via text message, according to the lawyer.

"If her claims are false, it's blackmail. Even if they are true, the matter has already been closed with the paid settlement, so it's a case of defamation," said Kim's lawyer.

Kim's lawyer said he was involved in discussions how to legally respond to the matter.

The report that Kim's former girlfriend Choi had previously had a miscarriage with Kim's child was released on a TV entertainment program Monday. Kim reportedly exchanged text messages with Choi in May and June last year about the alleged miscarriage.

Choi filed a lawsuit against Kim on Aug. 20 last year, citing bodily injury and assault on several occasions during their romantic relationship. The couple had been dating for two years.

Choi claimed that Kim repeatedly attacked her and asked for forgiveness. Kim admitted to assault on one occasion during a two-month period of "serious arguments" that led to "bodily fights."

Kim has since publicly apologized for causing Choi mental and physical distress.

Causing bodily injury is a criminal offense in Korea, punishable for up to seven years in prison with fines of up to 10 million won ($9,250).

Kim was ordered on Jan. 19 to pay a fine of 5 million won in damages to Choi. Choi originally demanded 1.6 billion won in compensation, citing "psychological damage" from the troubled relationship with him.

Choi is said to currently be five months pregnant with Kim's child.

If true, it would means the couple had a physical relationship in December or January well into their legal dispute, about four months after Choi filed the lawsuit.

Kim is scheduled to enlist for his mandatory military service Tuesday.

The 28-year-old previously bore a gentle and romantic image. He debuted his musical career with boy group SS501 in 2005 and also acted in TV dramas like "Boys Over Flowers."
