It will be jointly produced by film studio Warner Bros. and an unnamed Chinese production company and will be filmed in Shanghai and New York.

The "Gossip Girl" series ran for six seasons from 2007 to 2012. It followed the story of upper-class teenage girls and launched lead actresses Blake Lively and Leighton Meester to international fame.

The Chinese adaption will feature privileged women in their 20s who occupy the "top 1 percent elite class" in an envisioned "grand-scale" television series.

"There is a lot of interest in China in a Chinese adaptation of ... the popular American 'Gossip Girl' series," said a spokesperson for an unnamed Chinese agency Sunday. The spokesperson added that Park has recently gained popularity among Chinese viewers.
