In an interview with a local radio station, Jung said that he understands some people’s concerns about the Yemeni refugees and why he was criticized for speaking out on the issue.

When asked about the hostile online reaction, Jung said that he has read all the comments on his social media accounts at least twice to emotionally relate to the people who call for the repatriation of the refugees.

“In order to communicate with opposing opinions, we need to understand the emotions behind them,” Jung said.

However, Jung urged that Korea, as a member of the global community, should show sympathy for refugees.

Jung is a goodwill ambassador for United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
