Jennie of Black Pink, who used to be portrayed as a rather shy member of the group, said that her first solo track reflects 100 percent of her true self.

“If we had to divide everything into 25 percent as a Black Pink (member), you’ll be able to find 100 percent pure Jennie in this album,” said Jennie during a press conference for her solo track “Solo” in Seoul on Monday.

Straying away from Black Pink’s signature fierce hip-hop charisma, the artist opted for a more stripped-off sound of hip-hop and pop, which emphasized her moody and groovy vocals.

In the song, Jennie embodies a strong woman who doesn’t get tied down by the pain of a breakup, singing, “I’m sorry that I’m not sorry. From today on, I’m a shining solo.”

She said that the single, written and composed by YG Entertainment’s well-known producers Teddy and 24, showcased both her soft and independent sides.

“Many people say that I look charismatic and edgy when performing with Black Pink onstage, but they soon realize that I am rather ‘girlish’ after meeting me in person. I show both sides,” she said.

“Obviously, there are some parts I wish I could have done better, but it’s just the start. I’m just glad that I poured all of me into this album.”

During the concert, Big Bang’s Seungri, who was featured as a guest performer, had likened Jennie to Big Bang’s G-Dragon, citing how both of them are in the limelight in both the fashion and K-pop worlds.

Asked what she thinks about the title “female G-Dragon,” Jennie said with a shy chuckle, “That’s an accolade. I will keep making efforts to hold up to that title.”

Jennie’s solo album will be followed by Rose’s solo project, according to YG, which previously revealed plans for all Black Pink members to have solo promotions.




“YG’s head Yang Hyun-suk told me to ‘Go out and just kill it,’ and I think he just wanted me to have more confidence in my solo project as I looked so shy at first. Since I am the first member to kick-start the group’s solo projects, I hope not to get daunted by competition with other artists and just yield good results,” she said.

Black Pink is set to stage eight concerts in seven cities until March including Bangkok, Jakarta, Hong Kong, Manila, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Taipei.
