K-pop darlings Weki Meki are exploring the “lovely teen crush” theme with a new album titled “Kiss, Kicks.”

The album is fronted by lead track “Crush,” a moombahton electronic pop dance track about girls in love actively expressing their feelings. The bouncy song also features a rap segment penned by member Yoojung.

“Our new album is divided into ‘kiss’ and ‘kicks’ versions. If the ‘kiss’ version is about expressing love in an adorable way, the ‘kicks’ version is like kicking that love more powerfully to a partner,” said Yoojung during a media showcase for the new album in Seoul on Thursday.

The three-track album also features the hip-hop-tinged dance track “True Valentine” and melodious “Dear.” The record marks the group’s first release since its second EP, “Lucky,” in February, which featured lead track “La La La.”

Having also penned “True Valentine,” Yoojung said it was no great chore to write the lyrics despite her meticulous personality.

Her bandmates also expressed satisfaction with her work.

“Thanks to her lyrics, the song got even more energetic,” said Lua.

“Thanks for making the song’s ‘killing’ part,” Doyeon said.

The eight-piece Weki Meki debuted with the EP “WEME” in August last year. Two of its members, Yoojung and Doyeon, had previously debuted as part of the girl group I.O.I in 2016 after winning the popular audition program “Produce 101.”

“Since this is our first single album, we studied and put a lot of effort into every single song,” Lucy said.

Weki Meki will kick off its promotions for the new album with an appearance on KBS’ “Music Bank” on Friday.
