Super Junior, iKon win hearts in Jakarta at closing ceremony of 2018 Asian Games

Super Junior and iKon performed as part of the grand finale for the closing ceremony of the 2018 Jakarta-Palembang Asian Games on Sunday.

The two K-pop acts, among the most beloved in Asia, took to the stage at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta, Indonesia, the same stadium used for the opening ceremony. The 2018 Jakarta-Palembang Asian Games ran from Aug. 18 to Sept. 2.

Amid the deafening screams of about 60,000 fans, Super Junior mesmerized the crowd with hits “Sorry, Sorry,” “Mr. Simple” and “Bonamana,” while iKon performed the smash hit “Love Scenario” and "Rhythm ta." According to local media, both performances met with explosive applause, with people from all over the globe singing along in Korean and major Indonesian media reporting on the event.

Other performers at the global event included well-known Indonesian singer-songwriter Isyana Sarasvati, Indonesian rapper Jflow and singer BCL as well as Indian singer Siddharth Slathia.

After the show, the Super Junior members took to social media to express their excitement, with Lee Teuk saying, “Thank you, Asian Games Organizing Committee, for inviting us to the ceremony. We are more than glad to have wrapped up the last moment(s) of the festival, the stage of (harmony).” Si-won drew cheers from international fans by writing in English, “Great honor to be a part of the
Asian Games 2018 closing ceremony. An ‘End’ is just another word for a ‘New beginning’. Let’s share the energy of Asia!”

The members of iKon also expressed gratitude during a pre-concert media interview, saying, “It is our great honor to represent K-pop artists and perform at such a big event in Asia.”

Super Junior dropped its repackaged album “Replay,” fronted by Latin-pop “Lo Siento,” in April. IKon kicked off its world tour Aug. 18 at Seoul’s Olympic Park Stadium after releasing the album, “New Kids: Continue” on Aug. 3.
