Many titles describe Minseo, the first female soloist to debut under Mystic Entertainment in five years. She is not only known as one of the most beloved disciples of Mystic’s CEO and producer Yoon Jong-shin, but has also earned the nickname “super rookie” for sweeping charts with her pre-debut track “Yes,” a collaboration with the song’s composer Yoon and a female response track to his mega-hit “Like It.”

Having already released three songs prior to her debut, Minseo made her first official debut on Wednesday with the single “Is Who,” the third song of her coming-of-age debut EP “The Diary of Youth.”

And in her new jazzy song, Minseo transformed into a dancing black swan, a truly drastic transition considering her previous image as a doe-eyed innocent girl with a bobbed-hair.

“I have rarely danced and sang at the same time in my life. Dancing to ‘Is Who’ was really a big challenge for me, but I’m glad that the result came out well,” said Minseo during her debut showcase in Seoul on Wednesday.

Although she had to repeat the “Is Who” performance twice due to acoustic problems, which could have been received as a huge incident to the debuting singer, the 21-year-old didn’t seem to get daunted at all.

Smiling brightly, Minseo, clad in body-hugging black pants and sleeveless top that showed a black swan printing, went on to explain that the song was about a girl who has grown confident and candid about love, while not knowing what love exactly means.

“In my first two pre-debut songs ‘The Grand Dream’ and ‘Growing Up,’ that girl meets her ideal love type and experiences pain for the first time. Then she gets plucky in ‘Is Who,’ thinking that she now knows enough about love. But she is still lost, waiting for her true love,” she said.

Asked if she feels a burden over whether her new song will draw success as much as “Yes,” Minseo answered that she doesn’t intend to get caught in that pressure.

“Although I’m so grateful that I received so much love with ‘Yes,’ I think this is a new start for me. I won’t cling to chart rankings, and focus on showing what’s inside me,” she stated.

The artist also said that her dream was to become an artist who can sing about life in far future.
