It may come as a surprise to many that Black Pink, one of the most popular groups in the K-pop scene at the moment, is without a full-length album to date.

The group is also barely visible on-air, with rare appearances on TV shows. Understandably, it is difficult to fathom how and why the act has gained such phenomenal popularity and ceaseless attention despite low visibility and minimal activity.

Even after a yearlong hiatus, the band is slaying the charts and breaking records. The music video for its lead track “Ddu-du Ddu-du” reached 50 million YouTube views in less than three days since its release on June 15, eclipsing the previous record set by Twice’s “What is Love?” which hit 50 million views in nine days.

How does Black Pink manage to stay relevant so effortlessly? For those of you wondering, the K-pop Herald presents the top three reasons why Black Pink is the hottest girl group right now.

1. From badass to “girly,” Black Pink does it all.

Black Pink generates badass girl crush vibes. At the same time, Black Pink is the sweet girl next door. The group appeals to an all-encompassing spectrum of audience.

2. With Black Pink, it’s quality over quantity.

Prior to the release of “Ddu-du Ddu-du,” the quartet had only five tracks under its belt: “Whistle,” “Boombayah,” “As If It’s Last,” “Playing with Fire” and “STAY.” Three of which landed at No. 1 on the Billboard World Digital Song Sales chart. Compare that to now-disbanded 2NE1’s just two songs on top of the Billboard chart.

3. Instagram queens

If there’s a lesson to be learned from BTS, it is that social media presence counts in today’s pop scene. Black Pink seems to have picked that up from the multichart-topping boy band.

Even during its break, Black Pink updated its Instagram account regularly. Since the account’s launch in July 2016, Black Pink boasts a whopping 10 million followers.

While their career may have been punctuated by a series of absences, Black Pink members made the wait worthwhile.

In a world where many stars rise to fame only to fade away shortly after, Black Pink’s unstoppable star power is telling, if not inspiring.
