'Detective K' tops box office on first weekend

The Korean adventure-comedy franchise "Detective K" got off to a good start at No. 1 in the weekend box office, data showed Monday.

"Detective K: Secret of the Living Dead" sold 786,299 tickets from Friday to Sunday, according to real-time based box office tallies from the Korean Film Council. The movie accounted for 48.4 percent of the all tickets sold.

The third installment in the Joseon period (1392-1910) detective series that launched in 2011 is a period comedy about a well-known detective duo -- Kim Min (played by Kim Myung-min) and Seo Phil (played by Oh Dal-soo) -- combining forces with a mighty woman named Wolyeong (played by Kim Ji-won) to solve a mysterious serial murder case.

Coming in second was "Keys to the Heart," a comedy-drama starring Lee Byung-hun and Park Jung-min seen by 222,553 people.

It revolves around a former Asian boxing champion going to live with his younger half-brother, who suffers from savant syndrome but is a genius piano player.

Walt Disney and Pixar's animated film "Coco" stayed in third place in its fifth weekend at the box office. It added 150,516 views to bring its domestic total to about 3.3 million. It currently is the fourth most-viewed Disney-Pixar animation in South Korea after "Frozen" (2013), "Inside Out" (2014) and "Zootopia" (2015).

"Coco" was followed by "Paddington 2," the sequel to the popular 2015 movie. The British-French animated film drew 104,835 cinemagoers.

The Korean smash hit "Along With the Gods: The Two Worlds" continued its long run at the box office at No. 5 in its eighth weekend.

The fantasy flick starring Ha Jung-woo sold 71,933 tickets in its seventh weekend. It is now the second most-viewed film of all time in Korea after "Roaring Currents" (2014), with 14.33 million total views. (Yonhap)
