Without a doubt, the year 2017 was the year of the girl group. With Twice and Black Pink storming the charts, the girl group no longer lingers is the shadows of the boy band.

But it also saw some giants of the K-pop world fade into history.

Here are some of the K-pop girl groups that disbanded this year.

Who in Korea has not hummed the notoriously catchy beats of “Tell me, tell me. Te-te-te-te-te-tell me,” under their breath?

The four-member group was an overnight sensation, taking the K-pop scene by storm upon its 2007 debut and its song “Tell Me.” But despite its follow-up hits like “So Hot” and “Nobody,” its extensive absence from the fans’ view -- due to its effort in trying to crack the US -- gradually hurt its popularity.

In February, the group officially announced that it will disband.

Its rival Girls’ Generation has not yet dissolved, but only five of the nine original members remain.

Between the colossal success of Twice and the disbanding of Wonder Girls and Miss A, 2017 would give a mixed feeling for JYP Entertainment.

On Wednesday, JYP officially announced that the once-four-piece group is no more.

The popular K-pop act has long been considered to have effectively disbanded. It has been inactive indefinitely since the end of promotions for the EP “Colors” in 2015. Members had been focusing on solo careers before Jia and Min left the group in May 2016 and November of 2017, respectively.

Sistar

Sistar has long been a powerhouse in the charts, being one of the few K-pop acts to have both a loyal fan base and popularity among the general public.

The girl group produced by Starship Entertainment has produced hits like “So Cool,” “Touch My Body” and “Give It to Me.”

On May 31, it released its last single “Lonely” before officially announcing its disbandment.

Despite this, the four members have boasted that their friendship remains intact, uploading photos of them hanging out on their Instagram pages.
