Wanna One member Kim Jae-hwan felt resentful while appearing on “Produce 101,” as he did not have an agency at the time, he revealed in the latest episode of KBS’ music competition show “Immortal Song 2: Singing the Legend” that aired Saturday.

“Immortal Song” features younger-generation singers performing songs by “legendary” singers. Saturday’s episode spotlighted Trot singer Lee Mi-ja, who was popular in the late 1950s and early 1960s. In the episode, Kim performed Lee’s 1967 song “Gireogi Appa.”

After Kim’s performance, Lee expressed surprise that the 22-year-old singer had been able to express the deep sorrow of the old song, which she had not thought would be possible for a young performer.

Shin Dong-yup, the host of the show, suggested Kim might have experienced sadness while undergoing the intense competition of “Produce 101,” as he did not have an agency at the time.

Project boy band Wanna One consists of the 11 winners of season two of Mnet’s audition show “Produce 101.” Kim appeared on the Mnet show as a trainee who did not belong to an agency.

“I felt deep resentment while appearing on the program (“Produce 101”). I tried hard (to prepare for performances) with the idea that I would resolve such sorrow after my debut,” Kim said.

Kim inked a management deal with CJ E&M in August after he finished fourth in “Produce 101.” The company will serve as his agency after Wanna One disbands in December 2018. Wanna One is currently managed by YMC Entertainment.
