Homegrown movies “Pandora” and “Missing: Lost Child” drew 1 million moviegoers, according to data from the Korean Film Council Sunday.

The earthquake-disaster movie “Pandora” topped 1 million as of 12:10 a.m. Sunday, five days after the national release, whereas thriller movie “Missing” drew more than 1 million viewers on Saturday, its 11th day in cinemas.

“Pandora,” starring Kim Nam-gil, is the first Korean movie to revolve around a nuclear accident at an earthquake-stricken nuclear power plant. The movie also depicts the South Korean government’s inability to respond to the emergency, for which many local media outlets speculate that the film makes reference to the 2014 Sewol Ferry disaster that claimed more than 300 lives, with emergency response system not properly in place.

“Missing,” starring actresses Uhm Ji-won and Kong Hyo-jin is reportedly a low-budget film, whose breakeven point stands at 1.6 million filmgoers.
