‘The Handmaiden’ named Best Foreign-Language Film by LA Film Critics

Korean movie “The Handmaiden” was named Best Foreign-Language Film of the year by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association on Sunday.

Ryu Seong-hee, production designer on the movie, also took home the award for Best Production Design.

“The Handmaiden,” starring Ha Jung-woo, Kim Min-hee and Kim Tae-ri, revolves around an orphan-turned-maid who is involved in a plot to swindle a Korean heiress during Japanese colonial era.

The movie marked Cannes-winning filmmaker Park Chan-wook’s return to the Korean box office after a 7-year absence. The film drew some 4 million moviegoers in local box offices.

Meanwhile, “Moonlight” received Best Picture award. The movie, which tells the story of a gay black man growing up in a rough Miami neighborhood, was also awarded Best Director, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Cinematography.

The awarding ceremony will take place on Jan. 14 in Los Angeles, Calif.
