Fans lash out at glitches during 2016 AAA ceremony

Wednesday’s 2016 Asia Artist Awards left some Hallyu fans fuming as glitches overshadowed what should have been a night of celebration.

Here are some of the mishaps that occurred during the event.

1. Glitches on stage

While girl group Black Pink performed “Whistle” and “Playing with Fire” two of the members, Jennie and Lisa, sang into broken microphones. Rose’s voice was also drowned during parts out due to a glitch with the background music. Seventeen‘s Dokyeom suffered similar microphone trouble on stage. Boy band Block B’s performance was not aired, though they performed three songs on stage.

The glitches were not limited to the sound. At times, performers could not be seen under the thick stage fog.

2. Glitches off stage

Fans shouting “sit down” could be heard before EXO and BTS took to the stage.

3. Flippant emcees

The ceremony was hosted by Jo Woo-jong, Super Junior member Leeteuk and actress Lee Si-young. Some of their utterances and behavior raised eyebrows, according to Korean K-pop fans.

Emcees addressed actor Cho Jin-woong as “ajae,” a word used for a middle-aged men, when he came on stage to deliver a speech. Also, the emcees giggled when actor Ryu Jun-yeol made speeches in English after he won the Rookie Award Drama Male.

4. Unnecessarily belittling word choice

During the introductory clip for boy band BTS, one of the tickers displayed “BTS got to No. 26 in the US Billboard 200” in a derogatory way.

5. Voters were disappointed


Some dissatisfied fans wrote online that the quality of the ceremony was disappointing overall and it was not worth the price they paid for votes cast on their favorite stars.
