In case anyone was baffled looking at actress Park Shin-hye’s Instagram post Friday of a suspicious looking dish on plate next to a bowl of steamed white rice, here’s some quick information about the Korean food known locally as ganjang gejang.

The savory seafood dish is raw crab marinated in soy sauce, still with its insides and roe. Due to the addictive salty richness, ganjang gejang is fondly referred to as a “rice thief,” because once one sits down with the crab, rice disappears so quickly.

Despite the appeal, the dish was picked in June among foreign visitors to Korea as the most challenging Korean food, due to its rawness.

A survey conducted with 726 foreign visitors to Korea in April and May revealed that 65 percent of the surveyed thought the marinated crab was the most bizarre of the Korean dishes.

Next up in the list were cheonggukjang -- a soup of fermented beans -- and sannakji -- live octopus.

The depth and breadth of Korean cuisine far exceeds the hackneyed menu items of fried chicken and K-BBQ. If Park Shin-hye can have it, so can you!
