Although it is located in the country’s mecca of winter sports, the iconic Yongpyong Resort is pulling out all the stops celebrating the summer season.

Opened in 1975, the resort located at the foot of Mount Balwangsan in Pyeongchang, Gangwon Province, was the first ever modern facility of its kind in Korea. With an annual snowfall of around 250 cm, and the site of the upcoming 2018 Winter Olympics, the surrounding area of the resort allows for the enjoyment of a wide array of winter sports including skiing from mid-November to early April.

However, during the hot scorching months of summer, the Yongpyong Resort still has an abundance of summer time facilities and outdoor events for the whole family.

Featuring a large-scale high speed water slide, the resort’s Peak Island water park is now open for guests to cool off with some splash. Not only does Peak Island include both indoor and outdoor pool zones, the five-story structure is complete with a nine-hole golf zone, sauna, DVD room, Internet cafe and even a sleeping room.

For those who want a little more musical excitement for their summer vacation, Yongpyong’s “Summer Cool” concert series is also in full swing until next month, inviting big-name K-pop and throw-back folk artists for free concert performance at the Yongpyong outdoor stage. The ‘90s pop trio Koyote will be holding a solo concert on Aug. 3, while Ailee will be performing on Aug. 13 and Choi Seong-su and the Sunflower band are both slated to perform on Aug. 20.

Starting Aug. 7, the Yongpyong golfing range will be converted into a nighttime outdoor theater, screening a wide range of movies every night until Aug. 19. And for a little more youthful exuberance, starting July 31, the outdoor concert area will be home to a special bubble and water gun festival event until Aug. 14.

The resort is also offering a number of discounted summer packages which offers guests a 40 percent discount on the scenic mountain gondola, 50 percent discount at hotel sauna and 20 percent off tickets to the mountain coaster ride.
