The revised bill on the Broadcast Act dubbed the “JYJ bill” passed the National Assembly on Monday, according to local media outlets.

The bill was proposed to prevent local broadcasters from banning the appearance of entertainers on their music programs without proper justification.

The move came as boy band JYJ, former members of TVXQ, was banned from appearing on terrestrial broadcasters’ music programs after having experiencing friction with their former agency SM Entertainment, the largest entertainment agency in South Korea.

Under the revised bill, a broadcaster is subject to a fine of up to 2 percent of the relevant sales in case they violate the law.

Rep. Choi Min-hee of the main opposition New Politics Alliance for Democracy, who proposed the bill, said, “The passage of the bill is expected to guarantee rights of entertainers, including JYJ, who have been violated by the tyranny of large entertainment agencies.”
