SM Entertainment posts record earnings in Q3

Korea’s largest label SM Entertainment has posted record earnings in the third quarter.

The label grossed over a record 236 billion won ($203 million) in sales and 34 billion won in operating profits, according to the company’s regulatory filing on Monday.

Its sales rose 13.6 percent and its operating profits surged 41.2 percent from the same period last year.

“Sales were fueled by the strong global performance of the label’s artists -- TVXQ, Super Junior, Girls’ Generation, SHINee, f(x) and EXO. Global sales went up 42.4 percent on-year (January-September),” the company’s official said.

“The company will continue to see an upward trend thanks to the growing sales in the global market,” he added.

S.M. Culture & Contents, a subsidiary of S.M. Entertainment which was newly launched to produce content, has also seen its sales rise 52 percent to post 18.2 billion won.

Its contents including JTBC’s “The Day,” KBS’ “The Merchant” and musical “In the heights” are expected to boost sales in the fourth quarter, according to industry watchers.
