Singer-actress Suzy of Miss A said she could associate with her role Jin Chae-sun, Korea’s first female pansori singer, in new periodic flick “The Sound of a Flower.”

“Jin Chae-sun was someone who really wanted to do pansori (traditional Korean narrative singing) amid hard circumstances,” Suzy said during a press conference of the film on Thursday in Seoul. “I know what that feels like. So I could empathize with her (while I was acting).”

“When I was training to become a singer, I was usually by myself in the practice room,” she said. “I enjoyed training and I felt happy when I was practicing by myself. But there were times when I was not improving and continuously faced limits, even when I worked hard. I thought to myself, ‘maybe this wasn’t my path.’ I cried a lot too.”

“When I was acting as Jin Chae-sun, it reminded me of that time,” she said.

She also explained that filming this flick was both cold and warm.

“The weather was really cold,” she said. “It was windy and my body was freezing. The staff members had a hard time. But even during those times, there were touching moments as well. I had great coworkers and director, which made it feel warm.”

The flick, directed by Lee Jong-pil, is based on a real story of Joseon era pansori theoretician Shin Jae-hyo, played by Ryu Seung-ryong, and his gifted student Jin Chae-sun, the first female pansori singer, played by Suzy.

“The Sound of a Flower” also stars Song Sae-byuk as a famous pansori singer Kim Se-jong and Kim Nam-gil, as prince regent Heungseon Daewongun.
The film opens in theaters on Nov. 25.
