‘Harley Quinn,’ an emerging fan culture in Korea

The announcement of “Suicide Squad,” an action-packed film soon to be released by DC Comics, has had an enormous impact on the spread of “Harley Quinn” photos of Korean celebrities.

“Harley Quinn” photos refer to idiosyncratic pictures of celebrities manipulated by their fans with eerily smudged makeup, such as vibrant dyed hair and colorful eye shadow.

The hallmark of “Harley Quinn” makeup is hair and eye shadow of different colors on each side.

Many a picture of “Harley Quinned” idol celebrities is sweeping online fan club communities and social media.

Harley Quinn is a female supervillain character, appearing as an accomplice to and girlfriend of the Joker, the main antagonist in the comic book series “Batman.” As her unique and colorful makeup has become popular riding on the coattails of the new flick “Suicide Squad,” some self-makeup meme stars dabbling themselves with “Harley Quinn” makeup are also becoming popular.
