The outbreak of Middle East respiratory syndrome in Korea is hampering local stars and companies from taking part in the upcoming Shanghai International Film Festival.

According to industry sources, the organizers of the event have recently sent out letters to Korean parties invited to the event asking them to reconsider.

Local media reported Thursday that the letter asked the recipients to “seriously reconsider visiting Shanghai” and informed them that some of the Korea-related events scheduled to be held during the festival will be canceled.

Korea-related events include a forum on a Korea-China joint project scheduled for June 15, and a film market in which 11 Korean entities were due to take part.

In addition, actor So Ji-sub has opted to stay out of the festival while actor Song Seung-heon, who was also invited to the festival, has yet to make a decision.
