Actor Song Joong-ki was discharged Tuesday from the 21-month military service required of all able-bodied South Korean men.

After a brief respite, the 30-year-old will jump into filming for a KBS drama, working title “Descendant of the Sun,” which is scheduled to air in the latter half of 2015 with actress Song Hye-kyo as the lead female role.

“Descendant of the Sun” is anticipated to be a romantic blockbuster featuring young soldiers and doctors fighting to preserve life in a foreign terrain under extreme conditions.

Song Joong-ki and Song Hye-kyo, respectively taking the role of a UN peacekeeper captain and a female volunteer medic, end up depending on each other in the crisis-stricken region of Urkesh, located in northeastern Syria.

Befitting his upcoming drama role, Song, while still enlisted in the army, had donated 100 million won ($90,000) to Nepal, wishing the victims of the recent earthquakes a swift recovery.
