K-pop boy band GOT7 won the online popularity vote to decide 2014’s top rookie band, beating its rival WINNER, in the upcoming Golden Disc Awards.

GOT7 came in first, garnering 1,115,003 votes, or 54 percent, in the New Artist Award category at 29th Golden Disc Awards to be held in Beijing, on Wednesday and Thursday.

Its rival WINNER was 11 percent behind, capturing 928,087 votes.

The monthlong online vote has now ended with GOT7 topping the poll, but it remains to be seen who will finally win the top rookie band title.

The winner will be decided during the two-day award ceremony, with judges’ opinions and the volume of digital song sales also taken into account.

The two newbies have fiercely vied for the honor since the online vote began on Dec. 10.

Both GOT7 and WINNER debuted early this year under two of the biggest labels in Korea, JYP Entertainment and YG Entertainment, respectively.

Started in 1986, the annual Golden Disc Awards has broadened its presence as South Korea’s representative music awards.

The awards will be broadcast live through the Chinese video website iqiyi.
