An apparent YouTube error involving the number of views of Psy’s “Gangnam Style” turned out to be a surprise event by the website, according to local news reports on Thursday.

Earlier this week, it was reported that YouTube had failed to count the number of views of the music video after they exceeded 2.14 billion, apparently the largest number which YouTube could count. The number even fell into negative territory when users clicked it.

The company, however, revealed on Thursday that this was, in fact, a surprise event.

“We had already expected the views would exceed the number. So we upgraded the system before the number reached the limit,” the company said.

The system is operating correctly now, YouTube said.
