The annual music awards were held in three locales, beginning in Korea with a ceremony for newly debuted acts before moving on to a fans’ choice event in Japan and ending with a grand finale in Hong Kong.

According to Twitter stats, the three-day event resulted in more than 56 million tweets over the course of a week.

MAMA had sought fan participation through online voting, which took place on Twitter from Nov. 1 to Dec. 9 and also in real-time during the show.

Wednesday’s fans’ choice event in Japan generated over 13 million tweets over the span of three hours in the Twitter hashtag poll to find the worldwide icon of the year. #MAMAvote trended No. 1 in 44 locales. BTS won the award, and the bandmates’ three thank-you tweets earned a total of 1.3 million retweets and 3.8 million likes.

The red carpet events in Japan and Hong Kong were broadcast live on Mnet’s Twitter account. The Hong Kong leg of the show let fans vote for the artist with the best red carpet style. During the 2 1/2 hours of voting, 10 million related tweets were published, with #MAMAredcarpet trending worldwide as No. 1 in 35 locales. BTS was voted as the act with the best style on the red carpet.

Organized by entertainment firm CJ ENM’s television network Mnet, MAMA has secured its place as one of Asia’s most popular music awards ceremonies since its launch in 2009. BTS was this year’s recipient of the awards’ most honorable artist of the year title.
