“To me, it is about why, despite everything, we should carry on, holding onto hope,” said actress Lee Na-young who plays the protagonist -- a North Korean refugee who gives birth to a son at an early age and abandons her husband and child to defect to South Korea.

“It’s heavy with emotions, but it’s also hopeful,” Lee said.

She revealed that fellow cast member Kim A-ra who is actually from North Korea, was her tutor for the Chinese and North Korean accents.

Helmed by director Yun Jero, the family drama was the opener of last month’s Busan International Film Festival. It will be released at local cinemas on Nov. 21.
